I believe The Future is Female

Untitled 3 copy 3

To our Project Gravitas community,

Earlier this year, Woman of Gravitas Shelley Zalis introduced me to the book, The Athena Doctrine: How Women (And Men Who Think Like Them) Will Rule The World. The book posits that the world would be a better place if it were driven by attributes most associated with women (nurturing, communication, sharing) versus a winner-takes-all, masculine approach to getting things done. When I met one of the co-authors, John Gerzema, I was moved to learn that he wrote the book with his daughter in mind.

The book prompted me to remember moments in my career when being a woman has been an asset. For example, a consulting colleague once asked me how I had developed such a close client relationship with a male senior executive. I responded, “I know nothing about sports, so I asked him about his granddaughter’s christening and how his son was doing in his first job.” On the flip side, I learned that I don’t play a zero-sum game effectively. On a project with an all-male team that had sharp elbows, I tried to compete, but ultimately, was penalized in my annual review for not being collegial.

So, I have come to embrace my feminine strengths. I am selfless, expressive, passionate, flexible, collaborative – all atributes John Gerzema’s survey reveals as feminine qualities that are more strongly related to leadership.

That’s why I’m proud to introduce the inaugural piece in our second Confidence Series, our seasonal collection that interprets a fashion trend for the Gravitas Woman. Confidence Series .02 – The Ultimate Blouse Wardrobe answers the eternal question, “What do I wear this with?” For our first piece in this series, The Jane Blouse, we created a top that embodies The Athena Doctrine.

We hope the on-trend lace detail reminds you of what it means to be uniquely female, while the crisp design and professional silhouette give you the power to own your feminine strength. Because, as someone once said, “A woman trying to be a man is a waste of a woman.”

With gratitude,
